Week 7 kicks off our 12 episode series diving into each fantasy team and their history for our league archives. We thought it was fitting to start the team history with our very first league winner, Trever Walters (Landon’s officially has an asterisk, does not count in league record however much he believes in his heart). Trever is currently 3-3 through the first 6 weeks of the season; with his team name being “Yikes” it’s easy to see exactly how he feels thus far. After starting out hot with a 3 game winning streak, he has faltered as of late, dropping 3 straight as well. With losing his two of his top performers in Kyren Williams and Justin Jefferson, it is valid to question if there will be brighter days ahead for this wounded juggernaut. However, this post’s intentions are not to ponder the future, rather, to explain the past.
As we know, he is a one time champion of FF Bowl I (Fellas Fantasy Bowl #1). But I wish to dive deeper into the bowels of a team that has seen war and lived to tell the tale. Like most current teams, Trever’s story starts before recorded history in a league known as Bourbs Fantasy. In year one, his season started out very hot, 5-1 in fact, but his record slid to 8-6 by the playoffs. This was enough to make the dance, but if he wanted to go far, he needed to heat up, and fast. This is where Amon Ra St. Brown stepped up, during the playoffs, he scored 23.5, 26, and 35.4 to win Trever the championship. Truly inspirational stuff. Trever dedicated his championship to the Sun God himself by dawning his winning roster with the name of “st brown saved me”
Year Two was tough on Trever. Some ‘experts’ say, “Why would a fantasy team experience a Super Bowl hangover, that’s idiotic.” Trever would beg to differ. Personally, I believe it could come from a ballooning ego in the wake of success or a feeling of indifference toward a league that you have already won. Whatever the cause, this hangover hit T-Funko pop like a truck. After finishing the year with a mediocre 6-8 record, he managed to escape a date with 24 waffles through a triumph over Gonski in the first round of the loser bracket.
The future is uncertain for this former champion. However, he still believes in his team, regardless of what others think. On the topic of who his favorite opponent is, he says, “Absolutely fucking nobody, I’m out for blood.” I think this perfectly sums up his mentality coming into each week. Throughout his history, Trever has been known to make fantastic waiver wire pickups, three of the best being: Justin Fields (2022), Amon Ra St. Brown (2021), and Kyren Williams (2023). In order to live up to his championship expectation, I believe he needs to make a splash (whether that be through free agency or trade) in order to make a run into the playoffs.
